I love nothing more than browsing through markets and shops bursting with souvenirs that are found in abundance in all touristy places. I always want some sort of tchotchke to remember my trip, but over the years have figured out what will be a nice remembrance and what will just collect dust. Here are my best suggestions for the souvenirs you will cherish forever!

Christmas Decorations
If you celebrate Christmas and have a tree, it’s easy to find ornaments or even just small things that can become an ornament. But my favorite souvenir are tiny Nativity scenes. They are pretty easy to find in markets – I have them from all over the world!

Cookbooks of Local Cuisine
If you can find one in English, cookbooks are a great souvenir. Just be aware you will probably have to convert metric system measurements into US customary units. (And why the US is not on the metric system like the rest of the world is perplexing!)

Textiles
I love buying textiles like scarves, table runners, placemats, etc. on my travels. They are always so colorful, easy to pack, and useful!

Jewelry
Many countries have beautiful beaded jewelry or are known for their gold, silver or gemstones. Most of the beaded jewelry is very inexpensive and fun to wear. But even if you want to buy something more expensive, it’s a great opportunity to invest in something that will help you remember the trip forever!

Food
Weird candy and snacks are my default travel gift to my kids after my trips. They love seeing the packaging and tasting the different things I bring back. Coffee, tea, jellies and jams, and spices are also nice things to bring back. Take time to visit a supermarket when you are abroad. It’s a great way to experience the local culture and get a rock bottom price on a souvenir!

Puzzles & Games
I love puzzles, and it’s fun to do a puzzle from a place I’ve traveled to. I can remember the trip the entire time I put it together! This is my go-to souvenir for Disney trips. Unfamiliar games are also a fun thing to purchase while abroad. You can always Google the instructions.

Photos
My favorite souvenirs from trips are my photos. For my family trips, I always put together a photo book with details about the trip. My current favorite software to use for this is Mixbook. I’ve also used Shutterfly and Picaboo. Word to the wise – never pay full price! Wait until there is a 50% off coupon.
