The beauty and history of the American wild west are seen nowhere more clearly than in South Dakota. Deidra and I explored the sate on an extended road trip several years ago and it has remained one of my favorite places to visit in the US. Here is our list of the 7 most sensational sites to visit in South Dakota.

Black Hills National Forest
Nestled in the western corner of South Dakota, the Black Hills National Forest spans over 1.2 million acres of breathtaking landscapes, from dense pine forests to rugged granite peaks. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history buff, or thrill-seeker, the Black Hills region promises an unforgettable experience.
Hiking trails like Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) lead adventurers to the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. For bikers, the George S. Mickelson Trail provides a scenic 109-mile route through serene valleys and historic railroad corridors. Marvel at elk, bighorn sheep, and the occasional mountain lion.
Don’t forget your camera for capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of places like Spearfish Canyon, where waterfalls and limestone cliffs create a picture-perfect backdrop. While the forest itself is a treasure trove of adventure, its surrounding attractions make the Black Hills a complete destination.
Rapid City, South Dakota
Known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills,” Rapid City, South Dakota. boasts a charming downtown. Visit the Journey Museum to learn about the history, geology, and culture of the area . But be sure to check out the City of Presidents Walking Tour sculptures, Dinosaur Park, and Old MacDonald’s Farm for a little Americana “road trip kitsch.” Rapid City is a great base for exploring Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Black Hills.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Mount Rushmore stands as a monumental tribute to four iconic U.S. presidents. The intricate carvings, set against the granite cliffs, inspire awe and patriotism. Evening lighting ceremonies add a dramatic touch to your visit to see “the heads”.
Crazy Horse Memorial
The massive, unfinished Crazy Horse Memorial sculpture honors the legacy of the Lakota leader, Crazy Horse. Visit the museums to witness a showcase of Native American history and culture.
Custer State Park
Custer State Park’s scenic drives offer opportunities to see herds of roaming bison up close. Meanwhile, activities like paddleboarding on Sylvan Lake and exploring Needles Highway provide plenty of adventure. If you visit in September you can witness the annual Buffalo Roundup. Even better, in November you can purchase your very own buffalo in the annual Buffalo Auction!
Deadwood, South Dakota
Visit the historic Old West town of Deadwood, South Dakota. The city is famous for its gold rush heritage, Wild West legends, and gaming establishments. Deadwood has plenty of historic sites, including the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

Step underground to explore one of the longest cave systems in the world. Guided tours of Jewel Cave reveal dazzling calcite crystals and intricate passages. Meanwhile, Wind Cave boasts a labyrinth of passages adorned with unique boxwork formations.
Seasonal Activities
The Black Hills shine year-round. Spring and summer offer wildflower blooms and mild hiking weather, while fall paints the forest in brilliant hues of gold and red. In winter, snow blankets the hills, creating opportunities for snowshoeing, skiing, and cozy cabin retreats.
You can camp inside the national forest, Mt Rushmore, and Custer State Park, plus there are several great places to stay in nearby Rapid City and Deadwood. There are also several other fun things to see and do while in the area.
Badlands National Park
Absolutely do not miss Badlands National Park when you visit South Dakota. The park is famed for its striking mix of jagged peaks, deep canyons, and sweeping prairies. These formations, sculpted by wind and water, display vibrant layers of sedimentary rock in hues of red, gold, and gray. Whether you’re gazing from scenic overlooks or trekking along trails, the park’s stark beauty will leave you in awe.
Take a hike along one of these amazing paths:
- Notch Trail – A thrilling 1.5-mile hike with a log ladder climb and breathtaking views of the White River Valley.
- Door Trail – An easy, family-friendly walk that takes you right into the heart of the Badlands’ formations.
- Castle Trail – The park’s longest trail, offering 10 miles of serene prairie and fascinating rock features.
Watch for bison grazing in the grasslands, pronghorn antelope darting across the plains, and bighorn sheep scaling rocky outcrops. Early mornings and evenings are prime times for animal spotting.

Robert’s Prairie Dog Town
Visit Robert’s Prairie Dog Town to observe playful prairie dogs in their natural habitat. Their lively antics will make this a favorite stop for visitors of all ages.
Lakota Ways
Visit the Lakota Ways-Pine Ridge Indian Reservation for an immersive experience into Native American history and culture. Interactive exhibits and traditional structures offer insight into the lives and traditions of the Lakota people.
Minuteman Missile National Historic Site
Step back into the Cold War era with a visit to this preserved missile silo and control center. The site’s exhibits and tours provide a chilling yet fascinating glimpse into a tense period of U.S. history.
Wall Drug
Don’t miss this quirky roadside attraction for a mix of kitsch and charm. You will find everything from Western-themed shopping to free ice water and homemade donuts on offer. They also have some pretty unique photo ops. Wall Drug is a great stop for souvenirs and a dose of local flavor.
Seasonal Highlights
Every season brings a unique perspective to the Badlands. Spring and early summer showcase wildflowers blooming across the prairies, while autumn offers cooler weather and fewer crowds. Winter transforms the park into a wonderland, with snow accentuating the dramatic formations.
To make the most of your trip, plan to spend at least a day or two exploring the park and a couple of days checking out the surrounding area. If you plan to hike and enjoy a more immersive experience, you can easily spend two weeks in this area and not cover it all. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear, and don’t forget your camera to capture the surreal beauty of the Badlands.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota, buzzes with energy and activity. Stroll along Phillips Avenue, lined with unique shops, art galleries, and local restaurants. And check out the city’s SculptureWalk for an ever-changing collection of outdoor art, making each visit special.
Don’t miss the historic State Theatre, a beautifully restored cinema that hosts classic films, live performances, and community events. Step back in time at the Old Courthouse Museum, which houses exhibits on the history of the Sioux Falls area. And the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, with its intricate architecture and peaceful atmosphere, is a must-see for history and art enthusiasts.
The city’s extensive bike trail system winds through scenic parks and along the river, providing opportunities for cycling, jogging, or leisurely walks.
Falls Park
At the heart of Sioux Falls lies Falls Park, a breathtaking natural attraction featuring cascading waterfalls along the Big Sioux River. The park spans 123 acres, offering plenty of space to explore and relax. Walk the scenic trails, enjoy a picnic with a view, or climb the observation tower for panoramic sights of the falls and city skyline.

Pierre, South Dakota

Pierre’s location along the Missouri River provides endless opportunities. Hike, bike, and spot wildlife at the LaFramboise Island Nature Area. Pack a picnic and enjoy serene views of the river.
For anglers and water sports lovers, Lake Oahe is a premier destination. Stretching over 230 miles, this massive reservoir is a haven for fishing, boating, and kayaking. Catch walleye, catfish, and northern pike, or simply soak in the breathtaking sunsets over the water.
