Clothing and Accessories
Selecting appropriate clothing is crucial when you pack for a European river cruise. The weather can vary from chilly mornings to warm afternoons. Don’t pack your whole closet! Instead mix and match your outfits. For a week to 10 days traveling, pack 5 tops that compliment 3 bottoms and you will have up to 15 outfits in one small bag. If traveling for two weeks you might include an additional top or two, but with careful planning these are not even necessary.
Bring comfortable outfits for daytime excursions, including t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and lightweight pants. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton and linen or a nice merino wool.
Layering is key. Pack clothes that can be layered to accommodate fluctuating temperatures. Opt for lightweight fabrics and versatile pieces. Consider including 1-2 that can be worn over your tops. This layer will keep you warm and increase your styling options.
Most river cruisers keep it fairly casual at dinner. If you mix and match your tops and bottoms, you can easily add jewelry and stylish footwear to eliminate the need for a whole extra type of clothing! Check if your cruise has themed nights, like a white party or a masquerade ball, and pack accordingly.
Pack a waterproof jacket, especially if you’re traveling during the shoulder seasons. A light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings is also advisable.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must for daily excursions. Include a pair of sandals for warmer days and slightly dressier shoes for evening events.
Accessories
Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, and scarves. They not only protect you from the sun but also add style to your outfits.
If your cruise offers onboard exercise classes or yoga sessions, pack appropriate workout attire. If your European river cruise ship has a pool or hot tub, make sure to pack swimwear. It can be nice to soak a little after a long day touring!
Electronics and Gadgets
Bring a good quality camera (or a phone with a good camera) to capture the stunning scenery, historical landmarks, and memorable moments during your cruise. Check out Tips and Tricks for Amazing iPhone Photographs and you won’t have to haul around a heavy camera!
Ensure you have chargers for all your electronic devices and consider a portable power bank for charging on the go. Cruise ships have all sorts of rules about extension cords and surge protectors. A simple plug with multiple usb ports can ensure you have enough spots to keep those electronics charged. It is also good to invest in long cords for your devices so you can use your device no matter where the outlets are located.
European outlets differ from what you’re used to in the U.S. Bring the appropriate power adapters to keep your devices charged. This one is good for multiple destinations and even includes 4 usb ports! Pack a converter for your European river cruise if you plan to bring items that do not have dual voltage. Most ships support 220v rather than the 110v we are accustomed to in the U.S. No matter what – leave your hair dryer at home! Your stateroom will have one and they do not tend to fare well, even with a converter.
Toiletries and Health Essentials
While European river cruises provide some toiletries, it’s a good idea to pack your preferred brands. Pack travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, and other personal care items you regularly use. For a complete list, check out my post on Packing the Perfect Toiletry Kit.
Protect yourself from the sun and insects by bringing sunscreen with a high SPF and insect repellent.
Carry a sufficient supply of any prescription medications you take, along with a basic first aid kit that includes pain relievers and band-aids. Check out this post on Packing a Great Medicine Kit.
Documents
Don’t forget your passport, cruise tickets, travel insurance, and any necessary visas.
Download the cruise line’s app if available, as it can provide information about onboard activities, dining options, and more.
Miscellaneous Items
Consider these additional items for added comfort and convenience.
- Bring a good book or have an e-reader with your favorites to enjoy during downtime on the ship.
- Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it throughout the day.
- Be prepared for unexpected rain by bringing a compact travel umbrella.
- Carry a backpack or tote bag for excursions to hold essentials like water, sunscreen, and your camera.
