Taking Full Advantage of a Long Airport Layover

long layover

Taking advantage of a long layover is a great way to make the most of your time and turn an inconvenience into an opportunity. With a little planning and preparation, you can turn a layover into a mini-vacation. You can explore a new city, or simply relax and recharge.

Explore the City

If your layover is long enough, you can visit local attractions, go shopping, or try some of the local cuisine. Just be sure to give yourself enough time to get through security when you return to the airport. Before leaving the airport, be sure to check the entry requirements and any visa restrictions for the country you’re visiting.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a guided tour of the city. These tours are a great way to see the sights and learn about the culture and history of the area. You can also book a private tour for a more personalized experience.

Confession Time

When I have a long layover in a city I haven’t visited, I will sometimes extend it to make certain I have time to see the sights. This is how I got to spend a day in Amsterdam, and another in Frankfurt. It is also how I plan to see Copenhagen in November. You can even plan to stopover for a few days to really see the sights. Relax and Recharge

If you’d rather stay at the airport during your long layover, there are plenty of options for entertainment and relaxation. Take a nap, watch a movie, or read a book in one of the airport lounges. If you have time, consider visiting the airport spa for a massage or other treatments to help you unwind. This can be particularly nice on the way home from a long trip.

Research the airport where you’ll have the long layover. Find out what amenities are available, such as lounges, restaurants, and shopping areas. Some airports even give tours! If you’re an airport lounge member, take advantage of the free food, drinks, and comfortable seating. If not, consider purchasing a day pass to make your layover more enjoyable. Need to freshen up before the next leg of your trip? Many airports and lounges come equipped with shower facilities. These are particularly handy when you catch a flight after a long last day of touring. Many larger airports also have small sleeping quarters you can rent for a few hours of shut-eye.

Getting It Done On A Long Layover

For those who want to be productive, a long layover is also a great opportunity to catch up on work or attend to personal tasks. Find a quiet spot and use the free Wi-Fi to check your email and work on projects. A long layover is also a great time to ring those friends and family who want to hear all about your trip. Just be sure to check time zones if you are out of the country!

Another option for making the most of your long layover is to exercise. Many airports now have gyms and yoga studios, so you can stay active and healthy during your travels. Or just power walk from one end of the concourse to the other at each terminal to accomplish this goal. If you prefer outdoor exercise, find a nearby park or trail for a jog or walk.

Be Prepared For Your Long Layover

Finally, don’t forget to pack essentials to make your layover as comfortable as possible. Having a comfortable outfit, snacks, and entertainment will make all the difference in the world. If you have any special needs, such as a vegetarian or gluten-free diet, be sure to plan ahead and bring along appropriate food options. Airport food isn’t always the best.

No matter what your preferences, there are plenty of options available to help you make the most of your layover. So, next time you find yourself facing a long layover, turn it into a positive experience.
