Clothing
Alaskan weather can be unpredictable, so packing layers and versatile clothing is key to staying comfortable.
Waterproof Outerwear – Carry a waterproof and windproof jacket to stay dry during potential rain or mist. I really like this one as it can be worn with just the outer layer but has an optional inner layer for added warmth. You will want both layers for Glacier Bay.
Insulated Jacket – Pack a warm, insulated jacket to keep you cozy during outdoor activities and excursions. You can actually use the inner layer of the coat above without the outer layer as an option.
Sweaters and Hoodies – Bring a couple sweaters and hoodies for layering, providing flexibility in adapting to changing temperatures.
Shirts – Pack long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself from both the cold and potential sun exposure. At the same time, it never hurts to have one or two short sleeved shirts. It can get warm on a July day when your shore excursion takes you away from the coast.
Thermal Underwear – Include thermal underwear for excursions in colder climates or glacier visits. These silk ones are really nice as they don’t add bulk to your clothes.
Footwear
Footwear suitable for walking and outdoor activities is essential for exploring the Alaskan terrain.
Waterproof Hiking Boots – Bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots for excursions and hikes on uneven terrain.
Comfortable Walking Shoes – Pack comfortable walking shoes for city tours and casual explorations.
Insulated and Warm Socks – Include warm, insulated socks to keep your feet warm in chilly weather.
Rubber Boots – Depending on your activities, consider packing rubber boots for wet or muddy conditions. These cool boots are all the rage in Alaska!
Accessories
Accessories enhance your comfort and protect you from the elements during the cruise.
Gloves and Mittens – Bring a pair of warm gloves or mittens to protect your hands from the cold.
Beanie or Hat – Pack a beanie or hat to keep your head warm, especially during outdoor activities.
Scarves and Neck Gaiters – Include scarves or neck gaiters to provide additional warmth and protection.
Sunglasses – Protect your eyes from the glare of the sun on snow and water by packing sunglasses.
Gear and Equipment
These items will enhance your experience during excursions and explorations in Alaska.
Binoculars – Carry binoculars to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and observe wildlife from a distance.
Waterproof Daypack – Bring a sturdy waterproof daypack for carrying essentials during excursions and day trips.
Camera and Accessories – Don’t forget your camera, lenses, memory cards, and a sturdy camera bag to capture the stunning Alaskan scenery. Or simply carry an iPhone 14 Pro or higher to capture stunning iPhone photographs. Check out this post for a few Tips and Tricks on iPhone Photography.
Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle to keep you refreshed during your adventures.
Toiletries and Health Essentials
Personal hygiene items and health essentials are crucial for a comfortable journey. Check out my posts on Packing the Perfect Toiletry Kit and Packing a Great Medicine Kit for a complete list of items. But these are your Alaska specific essentials.
Sunscreen – Pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, which can be strong in Alaska.
Lip Balm and Moisturizer – Keep your lips and skin moisturized, especially in the cold and windy weather.
Motion Sickness Medication – If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring appropriate medication to ensure a comfortable cruise experience. I also like these wrist bands for motion sickness on shore excursions. In fact I never leave home without them!
First Aid Kit – Include a basic first aid kit with items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.
Cruise Documents and Other Essentials
Ensure you have all the necessary documents and items for a smooth sailing experience.
Passport and Travel Documents – Carry your passport, cruise tickets, and any other travel documents required for the cruise. Even if your cruise begins and ends in the US, you will want your passport if you plan to do the White Pass and Yukon Shore Excursion from Skagway. This is an iconic shore excursion, and a total must-do!
Travel Insurance – Don’t forget to have your travel insurance policy and emergency contact details readily available.
Power Bank and Chargers – Bring chargers for your electronics and a power bank to keep your devices charged during the cruise. You might find your batteries have a shorter life-span in the colder climate. And don’t forget your charging cables! Check out my post on your Travel Electronics Kit so you don’t forget anything important!
Miscellaneous Items
Consider these additional items to enhance your Alaskan cruise experience and stay organized when you pack.
Books or E-Reader – Bring reading materials to enjoy during leisure time and relaxation on the ship.
Tote Bag – Pack small collapsible tote bag for carrying souvenirs and purchases during excursions.
Umbrella – Include a compact, travel-friendly umbrella to stay dry during unexpected rain showers.
