Ah, the excitement of embarking on a cruise! Is there anything more wonderful that an adventure at sea? Day one sets the tone for your entire voyage, so it’s essential to start off on the right foot. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-time cruiser, here are 10 important things to do on day one of your cruise.
1. Complete Check-In Procedures
Check into your cruise online. Despite almost everything being available electronically, print out your cruise documents, boarding passes, and travel insurance information. Sometimes you don’t have service when you most need it. Have your travel documents, such as passports and boarding passes, easily accessible and ready to go.
Consult your Travel Agent to double-check your cruise booking details, including departure times and ports. A good TA will make sure you have everything you need before you leave home. Make sure you have done all the things you should do Before Your Cruise.
2. Arrive Early
Beat the crowds and arrive at the port early. Arrive at the cruise port with plenty of time to spare to find your way and park your vehicle. That said, don’t arrive 3 hours before your embarkation time. There is likely a group disembarking the ship just prior to your arrival and the crew needs time to freshen up the public areas before you come on-board. So be prepared to wait if you arrive too early.
3. Pack Wisely and Don’t Carry-on Too Much!
Create a packing list tailored to your destination and the activities you plan to do. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, medications, and a power strip for charging devices. Check out great packing hacks on our website for complete lists on how to pack for a cruise as well as both checked bag and carry-on tips and tricks. And don’t forget all your Cruise Essentials!
Don’t forget your meds and your medicine kit! You can often purchase Tylenol and other OTC meds on the ship. But you will pay shipboard prices. So come prepared!
Check your cruise line dos and don’ts to be sure your luggage meets the rules. Most cruise lines will now allow you to carry on limited amounts of soda and wine if you wish. But the guidelines are different for each line so double check. Doing so will save you money on drinks packages.
Pack a small carry-on with a change of clothes, swimwear, medication, and important documents in case your luggage arrives late. That said, keep it light as you will have to carry it around until your stateroom is ready. Don’t even think about carrying on all your luggage! Your stateroom won’t likely be ready right away and you don’t want to haul all your possessions around while you explore the ship.
4. Dine In Style
If your cruise offers specialty dining options, consider making reservations for day one. These restaurants often book up quickly, so securing a table early ensures you don’t miss out on culinary delights.
Most people head to the buffet lunch as soon as they arrive on the ship. If the dining room or one of the specialty restaurants are open, select that option instead. These will be far less crowded and peaceful. The buffets are fine, but they tend to be very over-crowded at embarkation.
5. Explore the Ship
Take a stroll around the ship to familiarize yourself with its various amenities and attractions. Today’s ships are enormous. They really are floating cities with loads of hidden venues and attractions. Locate key areas such as dining venues, entertainment venues, pools, and the spa.
Many cruises host orientation sessions on day one. These provide valuable information about onboard services, entertainment options, and excursion opportunities. Attend these sessions to maximize your cruise experience.
That said, unless you have money to spare, don’t get too caught up in the moment at the spa orientation. Been there, done that, and wished I hadn’t. You will often find better rates later in the cruise. Or you might decide you don’t need to have quite so many services once you distance yourself from the sales pitch.
Review the cruise itinerary and sign up for onboard activities that interest you, such as fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, or art auctions. Some of these have an additional fee, and some are included in your cruise fare. Spaces may be limited, so early registration is key if you really want to participate.
6. Unpack and Settle In
You will be notified when you can arrive at your stateroom. I like to go there as soon as they allow to unpack my belongings and settle in. While it is tempting to come in and take a load off, take a few minutes first to check it all out. Maybe take a quick pic as it will never be quite this neat and tidy again!
Be sure to Maximize your Stateroom space. Learn where all the hidden storage is. You will be amazed at how the cruise lines utilize every spec of space. Learn to work the thermostat and other technology so you are cool and comfortable. And try to put things away in a manner so they are easy to keep tidy.
Once you are unpacked, store those bulky suitcases out of your way and under the bed!
7. Attend the Muster Call
Safety first! Attend the mandatory muster call (safety drill) conducted on day one. Pay attention to the instructions provided by the crew on how to respond in case of an emergency. I always think of this like carrying an umbrella. If I know what to do and have what I need, I likely won’t need it!
8. Participate in Sail-Away Activities
Join the sail-away party on deck and soak in the excitement as the ship sets sail. Enjoy live music, dance, and wave goodbye to the shore as you embark on your adventure. The cruise director staff will likely have a great party lined up and this is a great way to celebrate your first day of vacation.
9. Relax and Unwind
After a busy day of embarkation activities, take some time to relax and unwind before dinner. Lounge by the pool, indulge in a spa treatment, or simply enjoying the view from your balcony. Do whatever makes you happy. Just pamper yourself and savor the moment.
10. Enjoy the Evening Entertainment
Wrap up day one by enjoying the evening entertainment onboard. From Broadway-style shows to live music performances and acrobatic acts, there’s something for everyone. Take a stroll through the various on-board venues to find different styles of music and entertainment. You are bound to find the right vibe to enjoy as you settle into your cruise rhythm.
