If you can’t commit to a week or more of travel, try a micro-vacation! A micro-vacation is a trip that lasts between 1-4 days. It can be to any location you can reasonably get to and back in this limited amount of time.

This is a trend I have fully embraced! Recently I spent three days going to the Christmas market in Quebec City, Canada. I also spent two days in Disney World on a whirlwind trip. I even considered, then rejected, going to Hong Kong for three nights recently. But that’s still on my list of options!
This is not altogether new to me. I’ve embraced the concept of long layovers and stopovers on my international flights for several years. But I’ve only really thought about the idea of a micro-vacation in recent months.
Micro-Vacation Trends
I’m not alone. According to a report by Priceline, people planned “little treat” trips for 2026. These trips are shorter, more frequent, and more spontaneous. Priceline says 65% of travelers are embracing this concept. And Gen Z (the oldest of whom are 28) are even more likely to treat themselves to a little vacay. 80% of Gen Z report that taking an international flight for a one-day trip is reasonable. I’m obviously not from this generation, but I’m with them in spirit!
The trend is continuing into 2027. Expedia’s Unpack ’27 report calls micro-vacations “trip snacking” with 79% of all travelers booking one-night stays. Another interesting 2027 trend is adults booking trips where they can take a break from adulting. Whether it’s skipping with Mickey Mouse along Main Street USA or riding a zipline at Park Xcaret in Riviera Maya, Mexico, a full 57% of travelers want to embrace their inner child. My micro-vacations are often to Disney parks, so I’m also a part of this crowd!
I’m able to embrace the concept of micro-vacations because I have a stash of points and miles. These help me pay for some of my expenses. I always use points for flights, and often I can use points for hotels as well. This means that my only expenses on a micro-vacation are activities and food. And to be honest, I would be spending money on these things at home as well.
