Clothing

Alaskan weather can be unpredictable, so packing layers and versatile clothing is key to staying comfortable.

Waterproof Outerwear – Carry a waterproof and windproof jacket to stay dry during potential rain or mist. I really like this one as it can be worn with just the outer layer but has an optional inner layer for added warmth. You will want both layers for Glacier Bay.

Insulated Jacket – Pack a warm, insulated jacket to keep you cozy during outdoor activities and excursions. You can actually use the inner layer of the coat above without the outer layer as an option.

Sweaters and Hoodies – Bring a couple sweaters and hoodies for layering, providing flexibility in adapting to changing temperatures.

Shirts – Pack long-sleeved shirts to protect yourself from both the cold and potential sun exposure. At the same time, it never hurts to have two, or even three, short sleeved shirts. It can get warm on a July day – especially that first day on board in Settle, San Francisco, or even Vancouver.

Travel Pants – Jeans are great at home, but save the space, and weight, in your suitcase and wear light-weight, quick-dry travel pants for Alaska. They layer well with your base layer on colder days and are really just the right weight for most Alaska summer days.

Thermal Underwear – Include a pair of thermal underwear for excursions in colder climates or glacier visits. These silk ones are really nice as they don’t add bulk to your clothes.

Pack a swimsuit and shorts! – Yes, you just might want your swim suit on your Alaska cruise. As I mentioned above, that first (or last) day on the ship could be warm and sunny. Also, there is nothing more soothing than a visit to the whirlpool after a day of touring. And bring a pair of shorts to go with that short sleeve shirt! They take up very little space and you will be really sad if it is sunny and you only brought winter wear.

What Clothes I Packed

Here is what I packed for my recent 19 day Alaska adventure. We cruised for 1 week, enjoyed 2 days in Vancouver prior to the cruise, and spent the remaining 10 days fishing and exploring the Kenai Peninsula. This list includes what I packed AND what I wore on the plane. I am a firm believer that if you can’t wear it 2-3 times, it should stay at home! NOTE: I had free laundry service on the ship that I fully utilized to keep things fresh, but could have made it with just a couple of “sink washes”!

  • Pants – 3 pair travel pants and 1 pair of shorts
  • Shirts – 5 short sleeve t-shirts and 4 long sleeve t-shirts that could be worn alone or over another t-shirt. Plus one flannel shirt/jacket to layer.
  • Thermals – 1 set of lightweight silk base layer
  • PJs – 1 pair. But I also used the base layer bottoms and a t-shirt 2 nights while I sent my PJs to the laundry.
  • Socks – 2 no-show socks, 3 wool socks, and 1 pair of compression socks for the plane because I am part of the “over 50” crowd (wear compression socks on longer flights to avoid deep vein thrombosis if over 50 or otherwise at risk).
  • Undies – 5 panties and 3 bras. Panties are the easiest thing in the world to wash in the sink! They are almost always dry the next morning.
  • Swimsuit – I brought a tankini styled suit with swim shorts. The bottoms doubled as shorts. The top was really handy on the fishing days when I needed to layer (and then possibly shed the base layers in front of men). I wore it instead of a bra and could modestly disrobe in front of anyone!

Footwear

Footwear suitable for walking and outdoor activities is essential for exploring the Alaskan terrain. I took 2 pairs of shoes and one pair of flip flops for the pool deck and around the hotel room.

Waterproof Hiking Boots – Bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots for excursions and hikes on uneven terrain.

Comfortable Walking Shoes – Pack comfortable walking shoes (tennies) for city tours and casual explorations.

Insulated and Warm Socks – Include warm, insulated socks to keep your feet warm in chilly weather. I love merino wool socks as they adjust to any wether.

Rubber Boots – Depending on your activities, consider packing rubber boots for wet or muddy conditions. These cool boots are all the rage in Alaska. Or you might consider buying them at your first port. They make a great souvenir!

Accessories

Accessories enhance your comfort and protect you from the elements during the cruise.Alaska is actually fairly temperate in summer, but those Glacier Bay days are COLD!

Gloves and Mittens – Bring a pair of warm gloves or mittens to protect your hands from the cold.

Beanie or Hat – Pack a beanie or hat to keep your head warm, especially during outdoor activities.

Sunglasses – Protect your eyes from the glare of the sun on snow and water by packing sunglasses.

Toiletries and Health Essentials

Personal hygiene items and health essentials are crucial for a comfortable journey. Check out my posts on Packing the Perfect Toiletry Kit and Packing a Great Medicine Kit for a complete list of items. But these are your Alaska specific essentials.

Sunscreen – Pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, which can be strong in Alaska.

Lip Balm and Moisturizer – Keep your lips and skin moisturized, especially in the cold and windy weather. The wind burn in Alaska is real – so load up on face cream.

Motion Sickness Medication – If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring appropriate medication to ensure a comfortable cruise experience. I also like these wrist bands for motion sickness on shore excursions. In fact I never leave home without them!

First Aid Kit – Include a basic first aid kit with items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.

Cruise Documents and Other Essentials

Ensure you have all the necessary documents and items for a smooth sailing experience.

Passport and Travel Documents – Carry your passport, cruise tickets, and any other travel documents required for the cruise. Even if your cruise begins and ends in the US, you will want your passport if you plan to do the White Pass and Yukon Shore Excursion from Skagway. This is an iconic shore excursion, and a total must-do!

Travel Insurance – Don’t forget to have your travel insurance policy and emergency contact details readily available.

Power Bank and Chargers – Bring chargers for your electronics and a power bank to keep your devices charged during the cruise. You might find your batteries have a shorter life-span in the colder climate. And don’t forget your charging cables! Check out my post on your Travel Electronics Kit so you don’t forget anything important!
