Traveling to Africa can be an exciting and unforgettable adventure. Whether you’re going on a safari, trekking through the jungle, or visiting cities and villages, it’s important to pack appropriately for your trip. Here’s what you need to pack to make the most of your time in Africa.

Lightweight Modest Attire
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that can be layered. Consider bringing neutral-colored clothing to blend in with your surroundings and avoid attracting unwanted attention.
When visiting villages or religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and respect local customs. Pack clothing that covers your knees and shoulders. Women should consider bringing a sarong or scarf to cover up as needed.
Sun and Rain Protection
Don’t forget to pack a hat, sunglasses, and a scarf to protect yourself from the sun. If you’re traveling during the rainy season, bring a waterproof jacket and some sturdy shoes.
Skin Protection
Mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects are common in Africa, so pack protection. Bring a strong insect repellent that contains DEET or another proven active ingredient. Don’t play around with the stuff you use at home. Mosquitos in Africa may carry malaria and dengue fever.
The sun in Africa can be intense, so it’s important to pack a high SPF sunscreen that is water-resistant.
Medicine and First-Aid Kit:
Accidents can happen, so it’s always a good idea to bring a basic first-aid kit with you. Make sure to include any prescription medications you may need, as well as over-the-counter remedies for common ailments like headaches, stomach issues, and insect bites. I always pack my travel medicine kit along with a prescription for anti-malarial meds!
Electronic Equipment
As much as the idea of totally cutting myself off from the world sounds good, the fact remains that I am addicted on electronics. Don’t forget your phone so you can stay in touch, as well as something to keep you entertained on the plane. I don’t leave home without my Kindle.
Africa is home to some of the most stunning landscapes and wildlife on the planet. So, bring a camera to capture your memories. Consider a high-quality lens to capture clear and vivid images.
Africa can be a challenging place to find reliable power, so pack a portable power bank to keep your devices charged. And definitely don’t forget your International Travel Adapter! I keep these in my Electronics Kit for every trip
Cards and Cash
While credit cards are accepted in many tourist areas, but cash is still king. Particularly when haggling for the best price at the market. Make sure to bring a mix of local currency and US dollars, as well as a debit card that can be used to withdraw money from ATMs. See our related post on how to get foreign currency.
What to Pack For Two Weeks in Africa
I like to be prepared for anything and everything when I travel. At the same time, I don’t like luggage that is so heavy I can’t manage it myself. Therefore, I pack with a plan to wear each top twice and to wear my pants a few times each. If they get dirty or smelly, I will just use the hotel sink to freshen them up. So, I packed the following for two weeks in Africa:
- Passport and All Applicable Visas – Don’t forget your Covid-19 Vaccination Card. Use this to keep it all together.
- 2 Pairs of lightweight travel pants in neutral colors. I really like these.
- 2 lightweight dresses similar to this one.
