Milwaukee
“1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, Schlemiel, Schlimazel, Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!”
I may have just shown my age, but I can’t think about Milwaukee without thinking about Laverne and Shirley! This humorous (and Yiddish) way to describe an clumsy and unlucky person and a German stew kicked off every episode of the famous sitcom based in Milwaukee. Laverne and Shirley were best friends and roomies who worked as bottle cappers in the Shotz Brewery. You can’t get much more Milwaukee than that!
In all honesty, Milwaukee may be famous for its brewing heritage, but this vibrant city offers so much more than just beer. That said, don’t miss a stroll along the scenic Riverwalk to check out some of the city’s famous breweries. Make sure to grab a pic as you pass the Bronze Fonz (yes, a life-size bronze statue of Arthur Fonzzrelli, better known as “Fonzie” from the classic TV show Happy Days).
No trip to Milwaukee is complete without a brewery tour. Visit the Miller Brewery for a look at the city’s brewing history or opt for local craft favorites like Lakefront Brewery and Milwaukee Brewing Company. Enjoy tastings, learn about the brewing process, and toast to a good time.
The Milwaukee Museum Scene
There are tons of fabulous museums to check out in Milwaukee. We can’t possibly list them all but here are a few of my favorites.
Kick off your visit with a trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Its iconic “wings,” the Burke Brise Soleil, are an architectural marvel that open and close daily. Inside, you will find more than 25,000 pieces of art, with everything ranging from classic to contemporary pieces. Don’t miss the lakefront views while you’re there.
The Milwaukee Public Museum is a natural history museum that opened in 1884. You will find a variety of collections appealing to basically every age group and demographic.
Discovery World shares the wonder of science with kids of all ages. This hands-on adventure is an unforgettable learning experience. Your kids will also love playing at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum. Their interactive exhibits will fuel their imagination.
Milwaukee is the birthplace of Harley-Davidson, and its museum celebrates this iconic brand’s legacy. Explore the history of motorcycles, marvel at the vintage bikes, and even try out a riding simulator.
For something a little quirky, check out the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum. With over 10,000 bobbleheads in the collection, you are sure to find a fan favorite. But if not, never fear – you can order a custom bobblehead of yourself or anyone else you would like to immortalize in this fashion.
Step back in time with a tour of the Pabst Mansion. Once home to Captain Frederick Pabst, the founder of Pabst Brewing Company, this historic home showcases stunning architecture, period furnishings, and fascinating stories from Milwaukee’s Gilded Age.
And, of course, you should consider checking out the Brew City MKE Beer Museum and Beer Bar. The exhibit explores the local culture of beer and its evolution.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors
Whether you’re traveling with kids or just love animals, the Milwaukee County Zoo is a must-visit. With over 2,000 animals and engaging exhibits, it’s an entertaining way to spend an afternoon. Check out the interactive aviary and reptile house if you dare, I personally, will give this particular exhibit a VERY wide berth!
Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Oak Leaf Trail, a 125-mile network of paths that wind through Milwaukee’s parks, neighborhoods, and lakefront. Rent a bike or simply lace up your walking shoes to experience the city’s natural beauty up close.
When the weather’s warm, head to Bradford Beach for some fun in the sun. Located along Lake Michigan, this urban beach offers volleyball courts, paddleboard rentals, and a relaxed vibe. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the lake breeze.
Shopping & Dining
The Historic Third Ward is Milwaukee’s arts and fashion district, brimming with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants. Stop by the Milwaukee Public Market for local eats, unique finds, and lively events. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the local culture.
From iconic cheese curds to innovative farm-to-table dishes, Milwaukee’s food scene is worth exploring. Visit local favorites Sobelman’s. The location on St Paul is in an original Schlitz Tavern! For a true Wisconsin treat, don’t forget to try a scoop of frozen custard from Leon’s or Kopp’s.
Day Trips from Milwaukee
Hike or bike through glacial landscapes, rolling hills, and scenic forests at Kettle Moraine State Forest. It’s especially stunning in fall when the leaves turn vibrant shades. This great escape is just 40 minutes north of Milwaukee.
Lake Geneva boasts beautiful lakeside views, charming shops, and scenic boat cruises just under an hour southwest of Milwaukee. Don’t miss the famous Lake Geneva Shore Path for stunning mansion views.
Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha is a famous roadside cheese shop. This castle is dedicated to selling all things cheese, from fresh cheese curds to quirky Wisconsin gifts. A roadside stop here is a Wisconsin tradition, and it is only 45 minutes south of Milwaukee!

Embrace the Great Outdoors
Madison’s nickname, “The City of Four Lakes,” hints at the plethora of water activities available. Rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the serene waters of Lake Mendota or Lake Monona. During the winter months, the lakes transform into a playground for ice fishing and skating. For land-based adventures, bike along the Capital City State Trail or hike through the picturesque UW Arboretum.
Quirky Things to See Just Outside of Madison
Visit the National Museum of Mustard in Middleton, Wisconsin! This quirky museum boasts over 6,000 types of mustard from around the world. It features a tasting bar, trivia, and all things mustard-related. It’s the ultimate stop for sandwich lovers and just 15 minutes northwest of Madison!
Drive 30 minutes west of Madison to Mt Horeb, Wisconsin. This fun small town is home to the Mt Horeb Trollway, a fabulous street lined with friendly troll statues. Inspired by their Norwegian heritage, these quirky characters give Mt. Horeb an enchanted atmosphere.
Pinkie the Elephant stands proudly outside a gas station in DeForest, Wisconsin. This enormous sunglass wearing pink elephant statue is an iconic roadside attraction. It’s a quirky nod to mid-century roadside Americana and just 30 minutes north of Madison.

Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Dells isn’t just a destination; it’s an adventure! Known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World,” this vibrant city in central Wisconsin guarantees a trip filled with memorable moments and family fun.

Road Trip Americana
Check out Dr. Evermor’s Forevertron in North Freedom, Wisconsin! The Forevertron is a whimsical, otherworldly structure made from old machinery, medical equipment, and more. Dr. Evermor (artist Tom Every) designed it as a “time-traveling” machine. As the largest scrap metal sculpture in the world, it is a must-see for fans of outsider art and is located just 25 minutes south of Wisconsin Dells.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Nestled in the pristine waters of Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a stunning archipelago of 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland. This Northern Wisconsin gem offers an unforgettable mix of natural beauty and adventure if you want to escape into the wilderness.

One of the Apostle Islands’ most iconic features are its incredible sea caves. Explore these natural wonders by kayak, gliding through arches and tunnels carved by the relentless waves of Lake Superior. Experienced scuba divers will enjoy checking out the sea caves under water. During winter, the caves transform into magical ice formations. Unfortunately, the park service will not typically allow entry to the ice caves in the park and entering one outside the park can be very dangerous. But that is ok, because the caves are gorgeous both inside and out!
With its crystal-clear waters and steady winds, the Apostle Islands are a sailor’s paradise. Explore the area in your boat or join a guided tour to navigate the scenic waterways. As you sail, marvel at the lighthouses that dot the islands, such as the historic Raspberry Island Lighthouse, which offers guided tours and panoramic views.
Untouched Wilderness
The Apostle Islands boast a variety of trails perfect for hiking. Trek through old-growth forests, along rugged cliffs, or across sandy beaches. Many of the islands feature secluded campsites where you can sleep under the stars and wake up to the soothing sounds of Lake Superior.

Road Trippin’
If you are into space history, check out the Sputnik Crash Site, located 40 miles south of Green Bay. In 1962, a piece of the Soviet Sputnik IV satellite fell to Earth and landed on a street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Today, the city marks the spot with a brass ring and celebrates Sputnikfest, a quirky tribute to the event.

La Crosse
Perched on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, La Crosse offers breathtaking river views and bluff hikes. La Crosse is renowned for its stunning landscapes, and there’s no better place to start your visit than Grandad Bluff. Drive or hike to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley and surrounding tri-state area. It’s a perfect spot for capturing photos or enjoying a peaceful picnic.

Beer, Beer, & More Beer
La Crosse is home to the world’s largest six-pack, actually a set of giant brewery tanks painted to look like cans of beer. You can find it outside the City Brewery, a fun photo op for beer fans.
If you actually want a beer, you can check out one of La Crosse’s Craft Beverage Trail. Or just visit the Pearl Street Brewery or Turtle Stack Brewery if the full trail seems to be a bit much.
La Crosse knows how to celebrate, and its calendar is packed with events year-round. Oktoberfest, one of the Midwest’s largest German festivals, draws visitors from near and far for lively parades, beer gardens, and traditional music. During the summer, the Riverfest celebration lights up the city with live performances, family-friendly activities, and fireworks over the Mississippi.
